Question 1

What is the Spellers Method and how does it help nonspeaking individuals communicate?

Accepted Answer

The Spellers Method, also called S2C (Spelling to Communicate), is an evidence-informed approach that helps nonspeaking and minimally speaking individuals unlock communication through motor-based spelling. At Spellers Center Tampa, we guide individuals to spell out words using letter boards, keyboards, or other tools by developing the motor skills and motor planning needed for reliable communication. This method respects the intelligence and cognition of the person while addressing the motor challenges that prevent them from speaking.

Question 2

Who is a good candidate for the Spellers Method at Spellers Center Tampa?

Accepted Answer

Spellers Center Tampa works with nonspeaking and minimally speaking individuals with autism, apraxia, cerebral palsy, and other motor challenges who have intact cognitive abilities but struggle with speech production. During our Intake and Motor-Sensory Assessment, we evaluate each person's motor skills, motor planning, and communication potential to determine if the Spellers Method is the right fit. We believe every nonspeaking person has a voice waiting to be discovered.
